

Maj. Gen. (Dr) R K Marwaha, often deemed as the Father of Vitamin D in India, has carried out pioneering work in the field of vitamin D deficiency and bone mineral metabolic disorders in Indians of all age group and both genders. He also established normative data for bone mineral density (BMD) in children and young adults and determined the daily intake requirement of Vitamin D through supplementation/fortification studies amongst children and adults. Through his work, he convinced the Food Safety Authority of India to fortify milk and oil with Vitamin D to address this pandemic of vitamin D deficiency across the country.
He holds the distinction of being the most highly qualified Endocrinologist in the country and single handedly evaluated the impact of universal salt iodization over the last three decades on thyroid disorders in terms of benefits and concerns. His comprehensive evaluation of clinical, biochemical, serological, cytological and ultrasonographic parameters in Indian children in the post iodisation phase would serve as baseline data for future reference. Significant impact in terms of benefits and adverse effects of National Iodisation Program has propelled the Government of India to review its policy from time to time.
A pioneer in the field of endocrine research, he has more than 145 national and international papers with over 10,000 citations published in highly reputed journals and has delivered several prestigious orations. He has been honoured with several national awards and recognition for his original work in the field of endocrinology especially endocrine imaging, Vitamin D deficiency and thyroid disorders.
Maj. Gen. (Dr) Raman Marwaha served as an Additional Director and Head, Division of Endocrinology and Thyroid Research Centre, Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), DRDO, Ministry of Defence till 2011. He has also been the past President of Indian Society of Bone Mineral Research ( ISBMR) and member Scientific Committee on Food Fortification ,FSSAI . At present he is Scientific Adviser to International Life Sciences Institute ( ILSI , India) and member Expert Committee on Non-Specified Food and Food Ingredients.
